چکیده

In this paper we present an approach to characterize group and individual behaviour in computer-supported collaborative work in terms of a set of attributes. In this way a process-oriented qualitative description of a mediated group activity is given from three perspectives: (i) a group performance in reference to other groups, (ii) each member in reference to other members of the group, and (iii) the group by itself. In our approach collaboration is conversation-based. Then we propose a method to automatically compute these attributes for processes where joint activity and interactions are carried out by means of semi-structured messages. The final set of attributes has been fixed through an extensive period of iterative design and experimentation. Our design approach allows extracting relevant information at different levels of abstraction. Visualization and global behavior analysis tools are discussed. Shallow analyses as presented in this paper are needed and useful to tackle with a large amount of information, in order to enhance computer-mediated support.

Qualitative Analyse von Gruppeninteraktionen in offenen verteilten Lernumgebungen

Open learning environments support on the one hand a constructive approach to potentially open tasks and on the other hand social interaction by means of distributed systems. Beyond that they enable a detailed data acquisition and thus the focusing on the process of interaction in groups. On the basis of a distributed system with shared workspaces and structured visual representations, an appro...

Designing Workspaces to Support Collaborative Learning

We present an approach to create structured and shared workspaces supplying functionality to carry out collaborative activities for a range of learning tasks. A workspace is deened in terms of three interrelated components: group, task and colaboration; each one modelling respectively the relevant features for designing the structure and support for a collaborative learning activity. The system...

Action-based collaboration analysis for group learning

In computer-supported collaborative learning, technology is used for enabling constructive approaches to learning as well as group interaction, particularly in distant and asynchronous situations. Recently, shared workspace systems have been developed that allow for jointly constructing conceptual problem representations by means of graphical structures and direct manipulation as well as the in...

What Can Policy-Makers Get Out of Systems Thinking? Policy Partners’ Experiences of a Systems-Focused Research Collaboration in Preventive Health

Background There is increasing interest in using systems thinking to tackle ‘wicked’ policy problems in preventive health, but this can be challenging for policy-makers because the literature is amorphous and often highly theoretical. Little is known about how best to support health policy-makers to gain skills in understanding and applying systems thinking for policy action.  <br /...

Supporting Self-directed Learning Processes in a Virtual Collaborative Problem Based Learning Environment

The PBL process is a self-directed learning process. In the light of self-directed learning theory, the author argues that computational mechanisms can be used to support selfdirected learning for PBL groups in virtual learning environments. In this paper, an approach to the support of self-directed learning is proposed. This approach supports self-directed learning in a virtual PBL environment...
